If you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will immediately jump out, because the surroundings obviously aren't comfortable.
But if you put a frog into a pot filled with cold water, and then slowly warm it up to a boiling point, the frog won't feel the slow change in the environment, and will end up boiling.
